The Directors Message

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” is a quote attributed to Albert Einstein.

A quote attributed to Albert Einstein

That quote could also be the ‘north star’ for us here at JUNO and in particular for our Program participants.

Surrounded by difficulty and challenge over the past couple of years we found opportunities. We developed new Programs; we launched new methods of delivery; we researched new and innovative content; and, thankfully, we established new client and partner relationships.

Our Proteges and Mentors face difficulties of all sorts in every Program. The very essence of what we do at JUNO is to help them to ‘adapt’ to the challenges, stare into the ‘difficulty-abyss’, and find the opportunities.

With the new financial year just underway, opportunities abound. At JUNO we have the opportunity, and privilege, to continue our meaningful and transformational work with our Community, Corporate and Government partners in FY24.

Personally I have the opportunity to lead a strong and unified team at JUNO. The JUNO team has the opportunity to support new and existing clients in our sweet spots of adaptive and authentic leadership, coaching, and character strengths. We have the opportunity to install sustainable models and frameworks for growth and development that make a difference long after our Programs conclude.

Together we have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of some of the most disadvantaged in the community.

An opportunity not to be missed.

Reads and Listens of the Month

At JUNO we read plenty and we listen to lots connected to Leadership, Leadership Development, Coaching and more. We have too, to stay current.

Each month we’ll include a link (or two or three) to an article or podcast that is topical and timely for you to read or listen to and reflect on. Curating and sharing is just our humble way of contributing to the pursuit of excellence in all things leading and leadership.

For this month:

Here’s a cool blog by Sam Altman on Productivity: “It doesn’t matter how fast you move if it’s in a worthless direction. Think more about what to
work on.”

Introverts can be leaders too. Indeed they can!! Buckle in for this one, it’s a very recent 40 minute podcast from HBR. Well worth the listening time though:

“We all have preconceived notions about the personality types associated with good leadership
— like confidence or emotional intelligence. But what about shyness? If you’re more reserved
but truly competent, can you become a leader?”

‘The Voice’ of JUNO Program Participants:

Making a Difference through Human Connection

At JUNO we choose NOT to ‘market’ who we are and what we do. 21 years on and strong our Programs and our legacy speak for themselves. What better way to spread the good word and work of JUNO than let Program participants speak for us…

This month, here’s a couple of unedited pieces of feedback from recent Program participants:

“The JUNO program was a fantastic experience for me, it really built up my confidence and I got to meet a lot of cool people. Thank you to Kha for getting my resume done and making it great. The whole team was just really nice to me. My mentor helped me apply for heaps of jobs, and I am so glad I joined the JUNO program and got to achieve some personal growth.”

Mason – IMVC Youth Participant

“Thank you to the people at JUNO and my mentor for helping me see job opportunities for the
future”

Caleb – IMVC Youth Participant

And, a nice set of words from one of our corporate partners too –

“Being a part of the JUNO Adaptive Leadership Program for me has truly been a transformative experience. It not only helped shape the leader in me but provided a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on others. The learning around the incredible power of mentorship coupled with the ability to leverage the collective wisdom of fellow participants, enabled me to adapt my style to the challenges presented, utilise my work and life experience as well as apply new tools and frameworks as I endeavoured towards making a meaningful difference in someone’s life”.

Atri Ray – Organisational Development & Engagement Manager – Development Victoria

Tiny Thought, with thanks to Farnham Street

Your life is designed to get the results you are getting right now.

For the trajectory to change, the approach must change.

This calls for judgement

It’s ‘problem time’ again, and this one is in your team.

Two of your key players to be precise. They are both great at what they do, but they just don’t
get along.

You really don’t have the time to sort out this ‘people stuff’ again. Hmmm what should you do? Option B is to ignore it and hope it will go away, whatever ‘it’ is this time. You are being a little naive here perhaps. You know deep down that ‘it’ rarely just ‘goes away’.

Option C is to type an email laying out some firm rules of engagement for their future collaborations and interactions and send it to both of them. That will fix the problem, right? You don’t really believe that, do you?.

Maybe there’s an Option A? You could invest some serious leadership and management time thinking things through at a deeper level. Keeping an open mind on a range of causes and possible solutions. Then, talk about the situation with each of them separately, and jointly, to really understand what’s going on. Staying analytical throughout.

Well done you, Option A it is. That’s a great judgement call.

Good luck.

You’ve just read a piece of micro-fiction. Yes, as real as it may have felt for you, it’s fiction. Fiction connected to the real world of Character Strengths and their optimal use in everyday situations. Keen to know more about the work we do on Strengths at JUNO? Let’s chat.
